Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is a quick-service submarine shop featuring “freaky” fresh food and fast delivery. Established in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud, the focus of this Illinois-based business is on using fresh, high-quality ingredients, including in-house baked sub rolls, to make delicious sandwiches. Starting small to control costs, the menu originally consisted of just four sandwiches on eight-inch French bread. Since then, the menu has expanded to include the Originals, Favorites, Plain Slims and choices for type and size of bread. For the carb-conscious diner, they offer a lettuce wrap version of any sandwich called an “Unwich”. A popular feature is the availability to customize any sandwich with many “Freebies” such as cucumbers, pickles and “Jimmy peppers”; add-ons such as bacon, guacamole or extra meat can also be included for an additional charge. To round out the meal, the restaurants offer chips, cookies, pickles and fountain drinks a la carte and as combo deals. There are now more than 2,800 Jimmy John’s locations throughout the U.S., most of which are independently owned franchises. In October 2019, Jimmy John’s became a part of Inspire Brands, which also owns the restaurant chains Dunkin’, Baskin Robbins and Sonic Drive-In.
